The HUman Beams series
Through the dark and into the light
Mourning and grief
These are responses that can occur with any significant life event. It could be the death of a loved one, an end to a relationship, the loss of a job or way of life, or any occurrence that leads to intense emotional trauma. It is a very personal experience and every individual reacts differently to loss. At times, there can be very overwhelming emotions and periods of grief can last weeks, months, or years. The Human Beams Series is a volume of work created through my personal experience with grief and loss.
Tall cylinders begin as shadowy forms and brighten into beams of light reflecting the dark days where trauma begins, to the brighter days where peace is found.
The mandala is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism. The circular designs symbolize the idea that life is never ending and everything is connected. The mandala also represents spiritual journey within the individual viewer.
The Human Beams’ mandalas illustrate the events, memories and thoughts we have when emotions of grief consume us.
Each mandala is carved by hand, depicting the time, effort and meditation it takes to move through the grief process. The relationship between the dark and the light, and the number of mandalas coincides with the work we have done to heal. Some days are dark with numerous thoughts and feelings, but over time, we learn to accept our waves, and even when big emotions hit, we remain bright and strong.
